New York City – September 2016

Mr. Strange’s aunt and uncle from Germany were visiting the states and were going to New York City, so his uncle invited his sisters (Mr. Strange’s mom and aunt) who live here to join them, and we decided to go as well, as I had never been to New York City.

We flew in to La Guardia on a Wednesday evening, checked into our hotel, Hudson New York, and ate dinner before resting for our first big day in the city.

Thursday, September 1

On Thursday morning, we met up with everyone to view the 9/11 Memorial outside Freedom Tower, where the twin towers used to stand. We then walked to Battery Park for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

The ferry ride was smooth and provided great views of the lower Manhattan skyline. Seeing the Statue of Liberty up close was also neat. We did not go up in the crown, however.

After dinner that evening, we briefly checked out Times Square. So many people!

Friday, September 2

I woke up early and went for a four mile run in Central Park. I then met back up with Mr. Strange and his mom and we went to the Top of the Rock observation deck at Rockefeller Center, which provided great views of the city, including the park. We had lunch at Joe’s Pizza, then went to Washington Square.

We then went back to Central Park and made our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There was a temporary exhibit showcasing Fashion in the Age of Technology, which was pretty cool; it featured lots of haute couture gowns, showcasing both handmade and machine-made creations.

We caught a spectacular sunset on the roof of the Met as we were enjoying wine from the bar.

Mr. Strange’s family headed back home in the morning, so we had the final day in the city to ourselves. I really wanted to see a Broadway performance, so we bought tickets to that night’s performance of Something Rotten. We then took the train over to Brooklyn and ate at Juliana’s Pizza. We were seated at the bar overlooking the pizza ovens, so it was really fun to watch them make the pizzas. It was absolutely delicious: the best pizza I can remember ever having!

We walked back to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.

We then did some shopping on Fifth Avenue before heading back to the hotel to get ready for Something Rotten.

It was performed at the St. James theatre, where Birdman was filmed, which was pretty cool. I marveled over the adult sippy cups of wine. We really enjoyed the musical, even Mr. Strange, who is not a big fan of musicals.
