On Friday, we headed down to Poipu to explore the southern part of the island.
Our first stop on the way from Princeville was a delicious breakfast at Java Kai. I had the macadamia nut latte and the acai bowl. So. Good.
We then made our way to the Makauwahi Cave Reserve. Our GPS took us the wrong way at first, but we passed an old sugar mill that we stopped to take some photos of.
We finally made it to the cave. The road there was a bit rough and bumpy. We were in an SUV but we saw some smaller cars make it there just fine. The trail to the cave is about a half mile, scenic, and well marked.
To get to the cave, you have to crawl through the entrance. I managed to do this by just squatting down, but I’m fairly short. LS had no problems at all. Poor Mr. Strange stood up too quickly and hit his head, so please be careful when crawling through.
The cave itself is not very large but has some interesting flora around it.
Once we came out of the cave, we headed over the little bridge, where you will find a tortoise and some restrooms, as well as a small beach area.
We then headed back along the trail to the car and onto our next stop: Spouting Horn park. This is a neat stop because every few minutes, water will spout up through a blowhole in the rocks. You can’t get super close, but there is a viewing area.
We were getting hungry by this time, so we headed to Puka Dog. We did have to wait in line for 30-45 minutes, but it was well worth it. We took our hot dogs across the street to the park and ate under the pavilion.
Once we were done eating, we walked over to Poipu Beach, where we stayed for a couple hours.
